The Quattr Method
L6 · Authority & off-site, measuring brand mentions and citation sources honestly
We measure mentions and citation sources; execution lives with PR. Said plainly.
There is a page about your category you have never edited and cannot edit. It ranks. Assistants quote it. Somebody revised it last spring and nobody told you. You are not on the distribution list for a page you do not own.
L6 · Authority & off-site is the lever the Quattr Method scopes most narrowly. That is deliberate. We measure two things. Brand mentions, meaning an AI answer naming your brand without linking a page. And citation sources, the domains those answers name instead.
Execution lives with your PR and partnership teams. The method says so plainly, because a roadmap that pretends to own work it cannot do rots from the inside.
On the cross-map it is primary on R3 · Referenced, the third question: are you the source answers are built from? And secondary on R4 · Represented, the fourth question: does AI describe you the way you would describe yourself, in your own positioning? R4 is only partially instrumented today, and that caveat travels with it.
Why authority stopped meaning backlinks
Because answer engines lean on other people's pages more than on yours. An answer engine is a tool like ChatGPT or Perplexity that answers a question directly and cites its sources instead of listing links. What it cites is very often a review site, a comparison page or a forum thread nobody at your company has spoken to.
Your off-site brand footprint carries more weight with those systems than classic link metrics do. A large share of what answers cite is third-party content nobody's link graph controls.
So authority stopped being a backlink count. It became a question about coverage. What does the web that talks about you actually say, and do the answer engines lean on it? A brand can be fine on the first and invisible on the second.
The shift shows up first in diagnosis. A lost citation often traces back to a third-party page changing its content or its mind. Nothing on your own domain moved. A team that only audits its own pages spends a week in the wrong building.
What this lever measures
Two things, both on a schedule rather than as one-off audits. Brand mentions against tracked competitors over time, which shows whose name your category's coverage carries. And citation sources, the domains AI answers cite, which shows who holds the answer slots your buyers see. The aeo-audit skill returns both, and a skill is a packaged analysis you run by name in your assistant.
The schedule is the point. Coverage moves slowly, so only a trend line tells you whether the PR work is landing. Movement in mentions without movement in citation sources tells you which half shifted.
Tone rides along with volume. We track negative mentions as their own series. A rising mention line with rising negatives is no kind of win, and pretending the two cancel out is how a sentiment surprise reaches a board.
The Share of voice in AI answers, measured honestly article covers how to read these numbers without inflating them. Share of voice is your slice of the AI answer space against tracked competitors, weighted so a citation counts for more than a mention. The weight itself stays unpublished.
Ask it yourself
Who gets mentioned most in our category's AI answers, and which sources do those answers cite?
What this lever refuses to claim
No outreach automation. No placement promises. No link acquisition. The deliverables are target lists and evidence. Which surfaces answer your buyers' questions, where the coverage about you is thin or wrong, and which wins would matter most.
The narrow scope keeps the measurement neutral. A platform that sold placement outcomes would be grading its own homework. Measuring while other people execute is what lets these numbers referee a disagreement.
That is the thinnest execution coverage of anything on the map, and we state it rather than dress it up. A PR team aims better with a citation-source map than without one.
The target list surprises people. Aggregators and comparison sites that will never sell against you are holding the answer slots your buyers see. A search competitor is often no kind of business competitor.
Authority runs alongside every phase
Unlike the two fastest kinds of work, internal linking and content refresh, this one does not wait its turn. It runs beside everything else. The coverage accretes slowly and pays out on somebody else's schedule.
Its wins are rarely announced. A corrected comparison page. An analyst profile brought current. A community answer that now says the accurate thing about your pricing. Noticing those land is the whole job of the measurement.
The Represented connection is why the patience is worth funding. What third parties say about you feeds how models describe you, so this year's mention work becomes next year's description, and starting in month one rather than month six is the difference between two very different years. The Quattr Method page shows both questions this work touches.
